About the art work:
This is a painting from a series of works created under the banner, Elements from 2012 which currently consists of twelve different works. Each painting is made from interwoven strips of canvas mounted paper, acrylic paint and sometimes other media, depending on the composition. This painting was then mounted to a flat canvas panel.
Originally stemming from my interest in vintage travel posters, I focused on well known elements to create my interpretations of travel posters for different countries and cultures. The project soon evolved to concentrate on the differences of countries and cultures that should be celebrated through theirs arts because art, as a whole, brings us together. Whether it's two-dimensional work; sculpture; literature; film; cuisine; theater and any other art form, I started to do some research on the origins of some of the art forms which I, in turn, translated as a micro journey of color and greater appreciation of each country or culture in the series.
Having worked with vintage posters for over twenty-five years, I have been introduced to a lot of ideas through travel, political and film posters, to name a few. Poland was inspired by the Polish film posters - a saw them as being more artistic. The artists drew on the essence of the story rather than simply focus on the actors, as most film posters do. I took this concept and ran with it.
I got to visit Poland twice - both times for work and both times during the dead of winter. The cuisine warmed me, and from this, the seed of this painting was planted. Back in the US, I got to work referencing my photos and a trip to the grocery store. Slicing through a head of red cabbage. the ideas blossomed with the maze-like structure of the cabbage and floral arrangement.
