About this poster:
During the World War 1, woman were mobilized to join the work force to replace conscripted men. Posters were created often to entice women to join munitions factories to aid the war effort, but were also very misleading of the reality the women would face while doing their part. This powerful image pulls the viewer into the unheated, noisy factories often filled with toxic fumes and other dangers these women came to work to day after day making fun shells, explosives, aircraft and other materials that supplied the front. Working long hours, many women succumbed to diseases and illnesses such as, but not limited to: headaches, shortness of breath, vomiting, bile in the urine, loss of appetite and mercury poisoning. In addition, many of the women that survived these conditions wound up losing their jobs as the men returned home from the war, without any recognition for their service in time of war.
