About the art work:
This is a painting from a series of works created under the banner, Elements from 2012 which currently consists of twelve different works. Each painting is made from interwoven strips of canvas mounted paper, acrylic paint and sometimes other media, depending on the composition. This painting was then mounted to a flat canvas panel.
Originally stemming from my interest in vintage travel posters, I focused on well known elements to create my interpretations of travel posters for different countries and cultures. The project soon evolved to concentrate on the differences of countries and cultures that should be celebrated through theirs arts because art, as a whole, brings us together. Whether it's two-dimensional work; sculpture; literature; film; cuisine; theater and any other art form, I started to do some research on the origins of some of the art forms which I, in turn, translated as a micro journey of color and greater appreciation of each country or culture in the series.
Having a personal connection to Türkiye after participating in an art symposium alongside 40 wonderful artists from twenty countries more than 10 years ago, I learned that paper marbling originated there. This is a process of aqueous surface design mimicking the veins in the marble stone. I incorporated this amazing technique into the sky, juxtaposed with the white star and crescent from the country's emblem. Below, whirling on the surface of the Aegean Sea, are a troupe of Turkish Delights.
