The text is from a famous poem, I Am Somebody, one of many by Reverend Dr. William Holmes Borders, a pastor at Wheat Street Baptist Church on Auburn Avenue in Atlanta, Georgia. He used his platform as preacher, writer, orator and activist during the Civil Rights era to help black communities whenever possible.
The title, I Am Somebody, was used for a documentary film by Madeline Anderson in 1970 after “black female hospital workers in Charleston, South Carolina who went on strike for union recognition and a wage increase.”
